Davidson River Campground Aims to Reopen Oct. 1 in Time for Leaf Season

Davidson River Campground, one of the most popular campgrounds in North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest, is close to reopening after nearly a year of renovations. The Forest Service’s goal is October 1, timed for leaf season, though the weather still gets a vote.

A Long Road Back

The campground closed in November 2025 for bathhouse renovations, and the project grew from there. The reopening was first expected in May, then pushed to July 1, then to September 1, and now to October 1. Recreation.gov attributes the latest extension to severe winter weather that affected construction. The Forest Service’s Pisgah Ranger District says heavy rainfall over recent weeks created another unforeseen challenge for the contractor, who is paving through September.

The operator lists several other reasons for the delays: last fall’s government shutdown, unsuitable soils that required foundation changes, cold weather that delayed concrete work, and design changes to improve storm resiliency.

What’s New

  • Roads: the campground loops and main access road are being repaved.
  • Bathrooms: outdated restrooms are being replaced with modern facilities, and every bathroom building will be fully ADA-accessible.
  • Utilities: electric, water, and sewer systems are being upgraded, and fiber-optic lines are being installed to improve communications across the site.
  • Dump station: expanded to two lanes to cut wait times.
  • Church Bridge: rebuilt near the church area.
  • Extras: a restored amphitheater, refreshed campground kiosks (the first major update in more than 20 years), and a new short interpretive nature trail.

Booking and Backup Plans

New reservations for stays beginning October 1 or later go through Recreation.gov or by phone at 877-444-6777, and the operator says existing reservations that start October 1 or later remain in place. Because the date has moved several times already, check the Recreation.gov listing or the operator’s closure page for the latest before you go. If it slips again, the operator points to nearby alternatives including Lake Powhatan, North Mills River, and Sunburst campgrounds.

The Bottom Line

If everything holds, campers get a refreshed Davidson River just as the leaves turn. The safe move is to book for October 1 or later and check for updates right before you leave.
